You may be wondering when to take your bundle of joy in for their first dental appointment. It may be surprising to learn that the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child’s first dental visit happen by their first birthday.

The idea of bringing your baby into a dental office at such a young age may seem odd to you. However, these visits are important for preventing cavities. Studies have shown that over 1 in 4 children has at least one cavity by age 4. Despite this, cavities aren’t the only thing you need to be aware of regarding your child’s oral health.

Visiting the dentist can be a fun adventure for your child! You can help us ensure that your child has a great experience by doing the little things. Talk to your child before your visit and explain in simple words what will happen so he or she will not be nervous. When you come in to our office, bring a snack and a toy or blanket. These small things will help your child feel that our office is a safe and comfortable place.

When you and your child visit our office, Dr. Sukyoung Ahn will share lots of helpful tips with you. Our dentist in Chico, California, will talk with you about:

– Caring for your baby or toddler’s mouth
– Fluoride and your child’s smile
– Bad habits, like thumb-sucking
– Preventing accidents that harm the face or teeth
